It's the coming of age story of Matey Gilbert. I loved this book & can't imagine why it took me so long to get around to reading it. I didn't even finish reading the review for fear of learning too much about the book. Then, I saw a review of it on the blog TBR 313 & I just knew I had to read it at once. I picked it up several times but didn't actually begin reading it. I was enthusiastic, ordered a copy but then, by the time it arrived, I'd moved on & it sat on the tbr shelves. The Deepening Stream was first mentioned in our group at least three years ago. I came up with a new one just recently, RIAL - read it at last. The Home-Maker was one of the top 10 best-selling books in the US in 1924, and Fisher’s deft handling of societal expectations of men and women and role reversal in marriage continues to secure its relevance today.We've come up with several acronyms in my online reading group, including HIU - have it unread (for books that someone mentions that other members own & immediately rush to the shelves & plan to read next). Is it possible to remain in their current roles, or must they conform to gender stereotypes?
